Beware of Cosmetic Contact Lenses This Halloween

It has become very trendy to wear cosmetic contact lenses for Halloween. After all, it does make a good costume to have scary vampire eyes or striking cat eyes. But it is very important to be aware that the wrong lenses can actually cause serious damage to your eyes!

Decorative lenses, sometimes called costume lenses, fashion lenses, or just colored lenses, are widely available as over the counter products. However this is against the law! You MUST have a prescription for decorative lenses because of the risk of eye damage due to improperly fitted lenses.

A doctor has to measure and fit the lenses for your eyes, there is no such thing as “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to contact lenses! Poor fitting lenses can cause damage like the following:

  • Corneal Infection
  • Corneal Scratches
  • Decreased Vision
  • Conjunctivitis
  • And even blindness!

Retailers that sell decorative lenses often do so without providing the proper instructions, which compounds the problem of potential eye damage due to misuse. Properly moistening and cleaning the lenses is a vital step that many people may not be aware of.

Never purchase decorative lenses from convenience stores, street vendors, novelty stores, or beauty shops. The only safe place to get these lenses is a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.

This is not to say that decorative lenses are inherently bad, simply that the way they are distributed and misused can cause serious damage to your eyes. If you are interested in using decorative lenses this Halloween, make sure to contact us or your eye doctor so that you can get a prescription and wear them safely!
